One of my favorite parts about hand lettering is how we can use it to understand ourselves more. We can process emotions and express ourselves. Ultimately, we can use it as a way to love ourselves a little more.
February is the month of love so what better time to evaluate our self-love? The way we speak to ourselves is really powerful. If we are often speaking negatively, it isn’t helping us. Hand lettering is a great time to start retraining our brain to speak positively about ourselves. Below, I have some words and quotes to start lettering for self-love.
Practice Loving your Hand Lettering
Be honest, how do you feel about your lettering? Speaking from experience, let me tell you that there isn’t a time when you will feel like your lettering is perfect and you have nothing more to learn. Or maybe there is and I just haven’t found it yet. But more likely, we’re always growing and changing which means our lettering will always be growing and changing with us.
Since we will never achieve “perfect” lettering (that doesn’t actually exist), how are we supposed to love our lettering right where we are? One thing that can help is recognizing how lettering makes you feel and focus on that. Yes, we can always learn more and improve. But hating our lettering doesn’t help us improve, it only makes us feel bad about ourselves. Instead we can practice and learn more while focusing on how lettering helps us feel calm and express ourselves. It is a break from our day as we explore our creativity.
It takes practice! The next time you find yourself feeling bad about your lettering, practice changing that thought for a positive way that lettering makes you feel. Lettering isn’t about the end result, it’s about the moments spent expressing yourself and exploring your creativity. In the long run, it’s those small moments that will add up and help your lettering to improve.
I love to say this phrase I came up with: “The way you create right now is exactly where you need to be.”
