What is the main point of Psalm 26? ›

Psalm 26 focuses attention away from the everyday world and on our covenant relationship with God. Through this prayer, we are confronted with the reality that we bear responsibility for our moral and religious integrity, and we are challenged to extend God an invitation to test that integrity.

David understood that hypocrites—sinners and bloodthirsty men—mingled with sincere worshipers. He also understood the Lord would sweep them away in judgment.

The Hebrew term translated "devices" here is zimmāh, which refers to plans or, perhaps most accurately, "schemes." The English term "devices" has also been used to mean plotting or conspiring. The idea, here, is that of evil intent.

David recognizes that the tabernacle is the place where God reveals His glory. His loving pursuit of holiness (Psalm 26:1–7) includes a joy at being in God's house.

Psalm 1 is called a wisdom psalm because we learn that happiness results from our choice to follow God's direction of life. In this psalm the writer sets forth two ways or two directions in life. One is the right way that leads to happiness, and the other is the wrong way that leads to misery.

The Lord means for us to guard our hearts by filtering our emotions, desires, thoughts, and responses through his Word. He is the watchman that protects our souls. And what's his primary means of defense? The sword of Scripture.
